Storage & shelf life
Proper storage reduces oxidation and degradation, which in turn reduces the risk of irritation and sensitization. Shelf life varies by composition and handling.
Storage conditions
- Store in dark glass when possible.
- Keep bottles tightly sealed.
- Protect from heat and light.
- Minimize air exposure (close promptly after use).
General shelf life guidance
| Oil type | Approximate shelf life | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Citrus (expressed) | 1–2 years | Oxidizes faster; sensitization risk increases with oxidation. |
| Monoterpene-rich | 2–3 years | Storage conditions matter greatly. |
| Mixed composition | 3–4 years | Varies by batch and handling. |
| Sesquiterpene-rich | 5+ years | Often more stable when stored well. |
These ranges are general. If an oil’s odor changes noticeably (stale, sharp, “off”), discontinuing skin use is prudent.
